A natural extension of the diamond set concept where the cutting elements are set in a single layer at the tool surface, TSP bits use the greater exposure of these elements to take a very large "bite" and offer very high penetration rates. This exposure coupled with the relative brittleness of TSP makes these products vulnerable to breakage in hard ground, so they are best suited to softer formations where they are the most productive tool available.
